Shwe Shwe is a cotton-based material originally introduced to South Africa with the arrival of the first German settlers in 1858/9. Popular with the Xhosa and other cultures, original Shwe Shwe carries a watermark on the back and is only available in blue, red or brown. Imitation Shwe Shwe is available in a host of colour options. Genuine Shwe Shwe is manufactured by Da Gama Textiles in original colours of red, blue and brown and other fancy colours when available.

• What is a Poppi?

A Poppi(e) is an Afrikaans term for a doll or soft toy.

• Who makes the Shwe Shwe Poppis?

The Shwe Shwe Poppis are produced by a team of 19 women and two men at the Project’s premises in Zola, Soweto, all of whom come from the local community. The age of the producers ranges from 19 to 69.

• Are there any children involved in their production?

Not at all. The Poppis were based on the drawings of a group of children at the Zola crèche, but although they have been compensated for their designs, none of the kids themselves are involved in the production of the range.

• How does the community benefit from the Shwe Shwe Poppis Project?

In addition to creating employment for 21 formerly unemployed men and women from Soweto, a Trust has been set up to administer and distribute profits from the sales of Shwe Shwe Poppis. A portion of profits are set aside to support an Education Fund, which aims to support children from the community and the ACFS.

• What is the production capacity of the Project?

Although our products are 100% hand-made, the team at the Shwe Shwe Poppis Project is capable of handling very large orders, provided we have a reasonable lead time. We do also carry a small stock of Poppis at all times for quick turn-around orders.

• Are the Poppis child-safe?

Our Poppis have been certified by the South African Bureau of Standards as safe for kids over the age of 3 years.
